Pretty Lucky

As I was feeding Owen before his early afternoon nap today,I realized that we are a pretty lucky family but not for the obvious reasons. Yes, we have a roof over our heads and food on the table, we both have jobs and are in great health. Not to mention a pretty adorable little boy, but we also have a pretty great dog! I couldn't ask for a better dog. She has her moments where she doesn't listen and can be pretty annoying but 98% of the time she is super sweet and nurturing towards Owen.
When we found out we were pregnant, we had some reservations about keeping Dakota and how she would be with someone else 'stealing' our attention. Once we brought Owen home TO her though, our hearts melted and we started to become confident about keeping her. Through owen's 6 months of life Dakota has become Owen's 'sister' and she continually shows her love and affection towards him.
So getting back to the origin of this post . . . Owen was mid-bottle and Dakota crawled across the couch so she could get to us sitting in the rocking chair. She got as far over on the arm of the couch as she could, sniffed Owen and then gave him little puppy kisses to clean him off. After a few seconds of this Owen burst out into laughter and she did it again - laughter continued.
It warms my heart that they have this great relationship and will grow up together. Brad and I are excited to watch Owen learn about dogs through her.
She walks by while Owen is on his play mat and he just looks up at her with wonder in his eyes. I can only imagine what is going through his head about this giant black thing that makes him giggle and gives wet kisses. The big object that jumps at the back sliding door asking to come in and makes him bust out in laughter!
She lets Owen grab and pull and explore her body without question. She just takes it! :-)

We couldn't ask for a better dog than Dakota.

6 months old!

Owen is 6 months old!! Time has flown by and our little boy is growing up so fast. He is scooting backwards these days along with sleeping in his crib over night and loving the solid food we offer him. Currently his favorite food is bananas, but today I pureed up some fresh peaches and he seems to like those a lot as well. Owen isn’t sure about green beans, but hasn’t totally rejected them yet.
This month we have tried:
*Peaches
*Pears
*Nectarines
*Green beans
*Bananas
He is pushing himself up on his mat that we have for him and grabbing for more objects. He has mastered the art of rolling over, which makes diaper changing a challenge. Brad bought him some building blocks in the anticipation of playing with him soon. We also had Owen weighed and he has gained – he is 18.5 lbs!! Chucky little guy!
About a month ago we started having Owen take his naps in his crib and gradually work him into sleeping there over night as well. I thought it’d be harder than it was to not have him by my side, but it’s actually kinda nice. We put him to bed and Brad and I have some much needed mom and dad time.
This month my mom drove out to visit us for about a week. My parents have two new cars since they’ve retired so they had an ‘extra’ car around and gave it to Brad and I. This was quite the blessing, as my little Honda is on its last miles since my tire blew out. Who wouldn’t say yes to a free car?? It was so nice to have my mom out. She made Owen some bumpers for his crib, a grocery cart seat cover and is going to attempt to make some diapers for us. Fingers cross. Speaking of diapers, we aren’t doing cloth diapers anymore. They were great in hindsight, but I can’t seem to get the stink out of them and they leak – a lot. ☹
On a happier note, Brad got a job! It’s with a company called CED and he started working full time this past week. Horray!! I am still working at the optometrist office inside Costco and enjoying learning something new every day.

This next month will bring Owens first Halloween and two drill weekends. We aren’t going to do anything special for Halloween, as Owen won’t remember it and we don’t want to go out in the cold. On November 6th we will have lived in our house for a year! I can’t speak for Brad but I’m excited to have trick or treaters at our door this year! It’ll be fun to see the costumes and kids.
